Meadowbrook Day Camp

Aquatics Program

Meadowbrook Day Camp teaches aquatics according to American Red Cross Standards and our own philosophy that confidence in the water is created when children feel safe. This is why we have two heated teaching pools that can accommodate swimmers at every level: from fearful non-swimmers to campers who swim competitively. Campers engage in a daily swim lesson each morning and a free swim period every afternoon. A strong emphasis is placed on water safety in and around all bodies of water at every swim level.

The pool area at Meadowbrook consists of two heated pools. One pool is specifically designed to be a teaching pool for beginner swimmers. This pool is 2-3 feet in depth and allows campers to feel safe and confident in the water while they explore the fundamentals of learning to swim on their own. We do not use flotation devices in our swim program. The second pool is an L shaped structure with varying depths from 3-15 feet. This pool is where campers of varying abilities are able to continue improving their swimming skills and gain confidence in their deep water aptitude.

candyOur Aquatics Director is Candy Oteri-Gaffny. An award winning broadcaster by day, Candy has shared her lifelong love of swimming with our campers for 29 years. She is a certified Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard who believes that children learn best when they feel safe in the water and trust their instructor. Meadowbrook swimmers are always encouraged to try their best and their efforts are rewarded with our “I Can Do It Award” for effort.

samanthaShe is joined by the Assistant Aquatics Director, Samantha Moppett. As a camper, Sam learned to swim at Meadowbrook, and returned to serve as a member of the aquatics staff throughout high school, college, and law school. She came back to Meadowbrook with her two daughters when they became campers. Sam is at the pool in the mornings. During the afternoons, Sam focuses on her career as a Legal Writing Professor at Suffolk University Law School.

The remainder of the Aquatics staff is comprised of enthusiastic and competent American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors and American Red Cross certified Lifeguards.

Meadowbrook teaches the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program Learn-to-Swim Skills that features six comprehensive course levels of swim instruction. New campers will be tested during the first couple of days; returning campers will be placed according to their progress last summer. If your child has taken swim lessons during the school year and has passed a level, please provide a copy of the card.

Please understand that a swimmer’s level at Meadowbrook may not be the same as at another facility.

If you would like more information about the skills involved in each swim level please follow the link on the bottom of the page.
